Running 42 KM for Rwanda's Youth Entrepreneurs

Hi everyone, Laura from the Vanguard Economics Foundation here!

This October, I’ll be running my first-ever full marathon (42 kilometres) — and I want every kilometre to count.

Since April 2024, I’ve had the privilege of leading the Vanguard Economics Foundation, where we are working with incredible young people to support their access to the labour market, advance their social enterprises and strengthen their capacity for job creation. In Rwanda, as in many parts of the world, youth face significant challenges finding employment opportunities. Many turn to entrepreneurship to pursue their ideas, but often struggle with the realities of the labour market; navigating the business ecosystem as first-time leaders, managing limited finances and raising capital, building a recognizable brand, and reaching customers in competitive markets.

That’s where our Youth Social Entrepreneurship Program comes in. Over the past year, we have been walking alongside 12 inspiring young entrepreneurs in Kigali — 6 women and 6 men — who are building businesses in fields as diverse as research, upholstery, and health and wellness. Together, we’ve focused on building their capacity to thrive: improving their business operations, strengthening financial management, growing their customer base, creating jobs for other youth, and boosting their confidence as Rwanda’s next generation of business leaders.

As we approach the close of our first pilot cohort, I’ve been deeply inspired by the resilience and determination of these young entrepreneurs. Running this marathon feels like the perfect opportunity to give back to them — to celebrate their journey and help set them up for success.

Why I’m running

My goal is to raise $4,200— $100 for each kilometre I run — to support these 12 entrepreneurs as they prepare to deliver their final pitches at their program graduation and networking ceremony later this year.
